What is shiatsu?
In Japanese Shiatsu means pressure with the fingers.
Shiatsu is an art originally born in China and later developed in Japan. Through manipulation, thumb pressure, and muscle stretching, it releases the energy circulating in our body through lines called meridians, dissolving areas of stasis or deficiency. By improving energy circulation, the person undergoing treatment responds better to the stresses of life that often impair motor skills and our personal relationships. Many symptoms, often bothersome, can thus be reduced, if not eliminated. Shiatsu's unique feature is that it reconnects the mind with the body, allowing us to listen to its promptings, giving this practice a preventative approach to "diseases." Shiatsu views humankind in its global context to alleviate life's disturbances.

Fundamental Principles

The human body has invisible energy channels, known as meridians, through which vital energy, or Qi (pronounced "chee"), flows. When the flow of Qi is blocked or unbalanced, health problems, both physical and emotional, can arise.
The main goal of Shiatsu is to balance the flow of Qi through these meridians. This is achieved by applying pressure with the fingers (especially the thumbs), palms, elbows, knees, and even the feet to specific points on the body called tsubos (acupressure points).
How is it applied?
-
Pressure and Stretching: The therapist applies firm, sustained pressure, combined with gentle stretching and joint mobilization. The pressure is adjusted to each individual's sensitivity.
-
Oil-free and clothed: Unlike many Western massages, Shiatsu is usually performed without oils or creams, and the recipient typically remains clothed in comfortable, lightweight clothing.
-
On the floor or on a table: Sessions can be conducted on a futon on the floor or on a low table.
-
Duration: A session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

Origin and Philosophy
Although based on ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, modern Shiatsu was developed in Japan in the early 20th century. Tokujiro Namikoshi is considered the father of modern Shiatsu. Other important styles include Zen Shiatsu (or Masunaga Shiatsu), which places greater emphasis on meridians and energy diagnosis.
In short, Shiatsu is a holistic therapy that seeks to harmonize body and mind through touch, promoting energy balance and overall health.
